Maruti Suzuki Ritz 2009 Review

[ad_1]

Say what you may of it’s strategy, but you can’t possibly accuse Maruti Suzuki of not offering choice. Plenty of choice. Walk into any Maruti showroom and it’ll be all but impossible to walk out without finding a car to suit your budget or need. There are bare basic cars like the 800 and Alto. If you don’t like bare basic there’s the Wagon R.

A bit more style? There’s the Zen Estilo. Better still there’s the A-star. Even more style and a bucket of sportiness? There’s the Swift, and that can also be had with the best diesel engine in its class. Maruti also has India’s best entry level sedan in the Dzire, a sporty sedan in the SX4 and even a premium pricey SUV in the Grand Vitara. But its world (like India in general) revolves around small cars and now there’s one more the Ritz to increase Maruti’s small car tally to seven.

A good question to ask here is, does any manufacturer need seven cars in one segment, all within two lakh rupees of each other? While it plainly looks like overkill, a cursory glance at sales figures show that the strategy has paid off handsomely. Despite the economic slow down Maruti’s sales have grown. Despite competition, every second car sold in India is still a Maruti. And there are plans to raise capacity by a further 200,000, a big chunk which the Ritz is expected to account for.

Internationally the Splash (in India the Splash name is owned by another manufacturer) came in as a replacement for the Wagon R two years ago. But, as you already know, Maruti doesn’t thrown any thing away and so the Ritz will continue alongside the Wagon R (which incidentally now sells more than the Maruti 8001). In any case you won’t be able to link the two or even find anything in common because nothing is carried over from the Wagon R. The Ritz is in fact based on the Swift’s platform and that’s an excellent place to start. The wheelbase is shorter by 30mm while the track is slightly wider but the Ritz is significantly taller. The stylists though have been extremely clever and the planted stance and wide track manages to disguise its (mini MPV like) 1.62 metre height very well.

While the tall-boy trend continues, the styling has been done by the same team responsible for the Swift and it makes for a cute yet contemporary visage with just that hint of sportiness in the flared wheel arches. The nose is large and expressive but overall it’s a more mature design tailored to the customer for whom the Swift would either be too sporty or too radical. The Ritz is particularly distinctive from the rear and the boomerang shaped tail lamps are apparently designed to look like splashes of water though if you follow a Ritz in the night, it looks exactly like a Honda CR-V (a good thing that).

The upright design and clever packaging liberates more interior space than the Swift and the tall cabin makes it seem roomier than it actually is. Both front and rear seats are positioned higher than in the Swift but there’s still more head room that you can swing a racket at. A big plus is that you don’t need to crouch to get into the car; you simply walk in and out of it. Maruti claims best in class head and leg room front and rear and four can fit in comfort, five at a pinch. That said space isn’t Fabia rivalling and the 225-litre boot is just about adequate.

The Ritz clearly highlights the strides Suzuki has made in recent years and the cabin is a huge step up from the WagonR, even the Swift. It’s airy ambience is enhanced by the light colour of the plastics and clever use of colours in the petrol-engined variant. Maruti have been a touch guarded in giving the inserts in the doors and on the top of the dash a softer shade of blue (the Splash has a brighter shade) but it is still funky and a welcome change from the beige everybody seems to be using these days.

The seats too are in a similar shade of blue. The central console and air- con vents have silver effect s4r- rounds with the air-con controls and door handles getting a similar finish. It all makes for a trendy cabin, a trait that carries over to the large white-faced speedo, the tacho housed in a separate pod (much better executed here, unlike the A- star where it can interfere in your field of vision) and the gear lever integrated into the central console (like in the i10). Top-end Ritz variants also gets an integrated stereo with steering wheel mounted controls, height adjustable steering, twin front airbags and ABS though there’s no climate control like on the Swift.

A lot of the parts look and feel familiar (taken as they are from the Swift) but cabin quality feels noticeably better. There are lots of storage spaces cupholders, an open tray above the glove box, a tray above the central con sole – and since the s are positioned higher up there’s better visibility for the driver. The seats are also better bolstered than on the Splash keeping in mind driver and passenger comfort.

To further boost comfort, Suzuki’s engineers have tuned the suspension to make the car ride better and of course account for the 30mm increase in ground clearance. She rides on 14-inch tyres, 175/65 on the base variants and 185/60 on the ZXi. Handling doesn’t feel as sporty as the Swift’s and the soft suspension does give it more body roll but that’s done intentionally to make the Ritz a more family- oriented car. The steering does feel good though and the car is stable at speed. Even over some bumpy country roads around Vishakhapattanam, the car felt very stable and you can even have fun with it (and that’s not some thing that you can say about the Wagon R). Ride is good and sorts out small to medium imperfections though larger ruts can unset tle the car and passengers.

Headline news in the Ritz is the all-new 4-cylinder K12M engine that displaces 1197cc and is based around the A-star’s 3-cylinder unit. Not only has this engine been tuned for India but it also gets different cylinder dimensions to allow it to dip under our 1.2-litre engine capacity limit.

This is the first BS IV emission compliant engine in this class and fuel efficiency is another talking point – the ARAI claimed figure being 17.7kmpl which is best in its class. With 85PS of power (3PS lower than the Swift’s 1.3-litre engine) and ll3Nm of torque it feels quite rapid and is allied to a typically sweet Suzuki gearbox. In character it’s similar to Suzuki engines we’re familiar with, happy to rev and requiring a decent dose of revs to keep the speed up. But there’s more torque lower down the rev range and that make it easier to drive in the city. Refinement is also good though when revved hard it can get quite audible.

The Ritz also gets the 1.3-litre common-rail direct injection diesel engine from the Swift, returned to meet BS IV norms. Driveability is also claimed to be better but the engine doesn’t feel as eager to rev as before, probably a factor of remapping for emission compliance. But with an ARAI stated fuel consumption of 21.lkmpl, I doubt anybody will complain. What I find surprising is the omission of a top-end Zdi variant which means even if you want to pay for it you can’t get airbags, alloys or the integrated stereo on the diesel Ritz (ABS is optional on the Vdi).

As of going to press, prices of the Ritz were still to be announced but we expect it to be priced simi lar to the Swift. In the short term the obvious cannibalisation is bound to occur, especially since the Ritz is an all-new car with better interiors, more space and better ride quality. The Swift though is due for a style and engine update very soon a when that hap pens the differences between the two will be significant enough to attract different sets of buyers.

Journaling at Summer Camp

[ad_1]

Encouraging kids to write during the summer is a huge part of sending them to camp. In addition to writing those adorable letters to home, kids love expressing their thoughts through journaling. After a long day of amazing outdoor adventures, a kid’s journal provides a quiet opportunity to reflect upon their latest experiences, and it later provides a fun way to look back on their time at summer camp. As you pack your kid’s bags for camp, use these ideas to get your favorite camper excited about filling up their journal with creative stories and memories.

Involve Them in Choosing Their Journal

Journals for kids range from basic spiral bound notebooks to colorful book bound styles that last for years. While some kids like lined paper to help them organize their thoughts, others prefer blank pages that provide lots of space for doodling. Your child may also prefer a journal in his or her favorite color or with awesome graphics on the cover. Spend some time with them browsing different styles, and let them pick out a journal that reflects their personality.

Help Them Set Up a Writing Schedule

Every day at summer camp is packed full of activities, yet the staff has also carefully planned for quiet periods of time during the day for kids to rest and reflect. Look over a sample schedule with your kid, and talk about the best times of the day for writing. For example, some kids prefer to write during their mid-day break when they are energized, while others prefer to wait until the evening since writing helps them relax. Either way let them know that journaling should always be something they enjoy. Although they may miss a day due to an exciting overnight camping trip, they can also write more the next day about the adventure.

Provide Some Writing Prompts

Kids sometimes need ideas for things to write about, even when their days are full of fun. For this reason, it’s a good idea to print out a few writing prompts and stick it on the inside cover of the journal. As you create your prompts, be sure to mix it up by asking open-ended questions along with giving your kid a few story starters that are perfect for camp. This way, they can choose to write about a “real” life experience or get creative and develop a short story.

Stimulate Their Creativity with Fun Accessories

Journaling involves so much more than writing for kids, and including a few fun accessories stimulates self-expression. For example, colorful pens will add an element of enjoyment to your kid’s writing and encourage drawing along with writing. Stickers, rhinestones and other art supplies will also help your kid personalize their journal as they write.

Along with fun stationary, journals are a summer camp staple that fits easily into a kid’s bags. As your kid recounts their adventures and jots down new ideas, they will be creating a valuable keepsake of their summertime experiences. While you know that journaling strengthens important skills such as creativity and vocabulary, your kid will simply enjoy the opportunity to relax as they fill the page with colorful words and drawings.

Power Wheels Ford Mustang – It’s Time For Cruisin’

[ad_1]

What better way to hit the streets than having your little driver hop into this stylish Power Wheels Ford Mustang? Ok, maybe not the streets but certainly the neighborhood sidewalks and all those interesting stops in your back yard like the swing set! You just have to tip your hat to Mattel and Fisher Price when they debuted this toddler ride on. The styling and attention to detail have made the Power Wheels Ford Mustang one of the most sought after models in Fisher Price’s arsenal of ride on toys.

So let’s take a look at what separates this “muscle car” toddler ride on from the rest of the pack. At first glance what catches your eye is the popular Mustang GT look. From the front “pony” grill to the rear mounted spoiler and bright chrome mag wheels, this Power Wheels Ford Mustang is the spitting image of its full sized counterpart. But it just doesn’t stop there.

Inside the vehicle your toddlers will smile with delight when they turn the pretend key and hear realistic engine sounds. And the fun doesn’t stop there! The dashboard gauges light up and when the pretend radio plays you have equalizer bars that flash along with it. But one of the nicest features for those long cruises is that you even have interior cup holders so the driver and passenger will never get thirsty!

Like most full sized toddler ride ons in the Fisher Price line, the Mustang has 2 speeds. The lower end tops out at just over 2 mph and is the factory preset. Once your fledgling drivers have passed the required Mom and Dad training you can unleash the full power of the beast by the simple removal of a set screw in the shift handle and watch them tear it up at a full 5 mph.

Another nice feature of the Power Wheels Ford Mustang is that you have a battery charge indicator that alerts you when you actually need to recharge the 12v battery or in other words, when it’s time to refuel! And if your toddler experiences a sudden growth spurt, the vehicle is also equipped with adjustable seats to always keep them comfortable.

Throw in the standard safety features of the patented Power Lock brakes and the bumper to bumper warranty and this vehicle becomes a winner in all aspects. Oh and one last thing, the Power Wheels Ford Mustang isn’t just for the boys! You also have a brilliantly colored Barbie Edition for the girls!

Finding the Right One With PSE Sights

[ad_1]

If you are a seasoned and well-experienced archer, you might be looking for more advanced sights from PSE, whichhas now become more advanced and affordable than other brands with more features packed into each piece of equipment. PSE released three types of Eclipse sights and each come with different features depending on your shooting needs. PSE has stardard, Micro and Micro Pro, each a bow sight of its own.

The bow sight was built for versatility and increased precision, and would be considered a mid to high level sight, which allows you to fine-tune your elevation and windage. The five 0.019 micro-pins made of high quality fiber optics give you more flexibility in knowing the distance of your target. More pins allow you to estimate closer or longer distances. Basically, top pins are considered the closest distances and lower pins for longer distances. The UV rheostat light is also another feature of these bow sights, designed to help illuminate your pins at dusk or dawn. The PSE Eclipse also has a third axis level to better manipulate shot angles.

In comparison to the PSE Eclipse, the Eclipse Micro bow sight is similar in the number of pins, UV rheostat lighting and the built-in third axis level that will surely help you with uphill, downhill or tree-stand shots. The difference lies in the special two-inch lens in the Eclipse Micro, which will help magnify the target for better shots. The Eclipse Micro comes at a slightly higher price than the Eclipse with the 2-inch lens feature.

A high level sight to consider, and a more pricy one at that, is the PSE Eclipse Micro Pro, which has several advanced features compared to the other two versions. With a unique mounting bracket for target sights, combined with the two inch lens feature from Micro, the PSE Eclipse Micro Pro is considered one of the best sights in the archery and hunting industry. The target style extension beam is especially designed for target shooting (even perhaps at competition level). Other features are quite similar to the two models with five 0.019″ fiber optic pins and a UV rheostat light, to let you see your pins even when there is low light. The machined housing of the PSE Eclipse Micro Pro is incorporated into one piece and is very convenient to use. The third axis level is definitely a strong feature that is a distinct part of all three models. PSEbow sights are surely made for quality, accuracy, and perfection in hunting and shooting.
